Mr. Scott Wood

I was born in Arlington and grew up there before attending the University of Texas at Austin. After college, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for a career, and so I ventured into management in the restaurant business. After years of toil and hard work, I made a bold decision to change my life and my career. I enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington and began the certification program for teaching in the state of Texas.

Once I started my student teaching, I recognized the importance of the teaching profession first-hand instead of theoretically, building upon my academic knowledge with real-world experience. It was both a pleasure and an honor. The significance of the teacher in American society cannot be misjudged; teachers carry a moral responsibility to help students become responsible members of society and compassionate, knowledgeable citizens.

I am a lover of language. In all that we do as humans, language is the building block across all professions, trades, and careers. We use language in all things. My hope and earnest desire is to teach the English Language Arts in order to prepare students for adult life, and while doing so, foster a love for literature and writing. The classroom is a beautiful, safe place where discussion can grow and thoughts can be shared. I find this to be an important part of increasing the sensitivity of students to culture, religion, socio-economic status, and ethnicity.

The ability to communicate effectively is a passion of mine, and through my studies in philosophy and English, I have built a strong foundation in the critical analysis of literature, as well as Rhetoric and Composition. If students are to succeed as citizens in this country, they must be able to communicate with a variety of audiences and tailor their speech and writing in order to do so. I feel that this is a necessary task for students.

I have always remembered the greatest teachers in my life, those people that reached out and helped me to not only achieve my goals, but also become a better person. It is an honor to step into that same profession and help students learn what it means to contribute to the benefit of American society.
