Byrd Middle School Band
Welcome to the Byrd Band website!
The Byrd Band is one of the most successful middle school band programs in the state of Texas, earning the distinction of being selected as the TMEA Honor Band three times, in 1983, 2005, and 2009. The Byrd Symphonic I and Symphonic II bands have earned sweepstakes at UIL contest every year for over thirty years, and have been named the Grand Champions at the Beach Within Reach contest seven times. Byrd also has more students make the All-Region band each year than any other school in Region 20.
Russell Porter, Head Director
Mr. Porter directs the Byrd Symphonic I Band, and has been a band director for ten years. Prior to working in Duncanville, Mr. Porter worked in Birdville ISD at Richland Middle School, where his bands earned many distinctions and awards including a Superior rating at the Peak Music Festival in 2015, 9th place in the TMEA Honor Band contest in 2015, and two-time Grand Champions at Beach Within Reach. Mr. Porter received his degree in Music Education from the University of Houston, and is a Duncanville High School graduate. He currently lives in Duncanville with his wife and four children.
Allyson Whitsitt, Assistant Director
Mrs. Whitsitt directs the Byrd Symphonic II Band, and will begin her fifth year as a band director at Byrd. Mrs. Whitsitt and the Symphonic II band earned Superior ratings from all judges in both the Concert and Sightreading portions of the 2017 UIL Contest. She also assisted the Symphonic I Band in 2015 when they came in 4th place in the TMEA Honor Band contest. Mrs. Whitsitt received her degree in Music Education from Sam Houston State University. She currently lives in Mansfield with her husband and dog, Lola.
Lorna Quintanar, Assistant Director
Ms. Quintanar directs the Byrd Symphonic III Band, and will begin her second year as a band director at Byrd. Prior to working in Duncanville, Ms. Quintanar was an Elementary Music Specialist in Garland ISD, where her 4th and 5th grade combined choir from Freeman Elementary School earned a First Division rating at the Hawaiian Falls Choir Contest in 2016. Along with teaching at Byrd, Ms. Quintanar assists the Duncanville High School Marching Band in the Fall semester. Ms. Quintanar received her degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas, and is also a Duncanville High School graduate. She currently lives in Dallas with her boyfriend and dog, Rusty.
