Welcome to Second Grade!

Welcome to the wonderful world of second grade! As your child’s second grade teacher, I bring to your child a passion for teaching and learning. I am thrilled to have your child in my classroom. I want to assure you that I plan to give your child a firm foundation on which to build his/her years of education. I have extremely high expectations for your child and for you, the parent/guardian. Success is determined in many degrees, but I assure you that I will do everything that I can to ensure a positive year for your child.

Your child will have homework Monday-Thursday in Reading, Math, Spelling, and in other subjects as needed. Please check your child’s planner daily for homework assignments and notes I may have written to you. Your child’s planner must be signed daily by a parent/guardian. This ensures that you know what your child is expected to do for homework. These assignments are vital for the success of your child. Not only do they reinforce our classwork, but they also develop responsibility in your child. I expect your child to read every night for at least 15 minutes. Your child would love for you to read with him/her. Not only will this help your child, it will create lasting memories for your child of quality time together. Please have him/her read the book to you. A reading and behavior log will be in your child’s homework folder that will be checked daily. This assignment is not an option. It is an expectation that guarantees growth for your child. Please keep the library books clean and dry. Please do not allow your child to write or draw in the book. Your child will be assessed a fine if the books are lost or damaged. Please sign his or her reading log daily. This is one of their homework assignments.

A discipline chart is used in my classroom in order for students to keep track of their own behavior. Each student will have the opportunity to move his/her clothespin up, which represents making positive choices. However, students will move their clothespins down for negative behavior, but they will get the opportunity to move their clothes back up when behavior has been corrected. Positive notes and other tangible awards will be given for excellent behavior and dedication to hard work as well. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for any questions that you may have. I can be reached via e-mail (, by phone at 972-708-2422, or you may send a note. Please call to schedule a conference.

Our instructional day begins at 8:00 a.m. If your child is absent, please send a note when the child returns. If a note is not received within two days, the absence is considered unexcused. Excessive absences can lead to court appearances and fines, therefore, please send a note.

Breakfast is from 7:30 until 7:55 in the cafeteria. No breakfasts will be taken to the rooms. If your child has eaten breakfast they will report to the gym prior to 7:55. Our class will have lunch from 11:00 - 11:30.

I look forward to working with you and your child! We will have a great year!
