Choir Students Sing at Carnegie Hall

Duncanville High School seniors Aadon Benson and Matthew Merritt traveled to New York City during the Thanksgiving break to perform at the city’s  historic Carnegie Hall.

The students joined the Duncanville Community Chorus and choirs from around the world in singing Handel’s Messiah at an event called ‘Messiah Refreshed.’

The young men, who have received a lot of attention for their part in a viral video performance of the Star Spangled Banner, performed alongside choirs from Qatar, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa and from across the United States.

The Duncanville Community Chorus is comprised of members from around the area. Director Nyadia Thorpe says she frequently invites high school students to participate in local performances, and she knew Aadon and Matthew from when she was their choir director at Byrd Middle School.

“We believe in community and we believe in providing experiences and a platform for our youth to be able to share with us,” Ms. Thorpe said.
