Culinary Students Craft Winning Cupcake

A team of Duncanville High School culinary students burned the competition at a Cupcake Wars competition judged by professional bakers - including celebrity chef Michele Ragussis from “The Food Network.”

The high school students whipped up a blueberry lemonade confection for the contest held in Midlothian on Saturday, Nov. 9.

“We wanted to come up with a lighter flavor and we also wanted to incorporate fresh fruit,” said Desire Turner.

“We had to do a lot of testing, making batches of the puree that was going to go inside the cupcakes,” said Akia Bolden. “It was just a long trial and error and then we finally perfected the flavor.”

The team of six high school students faced nine opponents, including local baking professionals.

“I was nervous – I’m not going to lie,” said Anthony Macklin.

The contest had four winning categories including: Most Creative, Best Tasting, Best Appearance and People’s Choice.

“It was just amazing to me – it was just a good moment. I was very proud of my team,” said Anthony Macklin.

“It was a joy to see these students come up with the idea and see it come to fruition with a successful outcome,” said Culinary Arts Instructor Wendy Shepherd-Tuten. “I am bursting with pride!”

Duncanville High School’s culinary program walked away with bragging rights and $150 in prize money.
