Duncanville High School’s Men’s A Cappella Choir filled the Pilgrim Chapel at Dallas Baptist University with music – as the group recorded a performance for the upcoming 2021 American Choral Directors Association National Conference.
“This year has been pretty unpredictable, to say the least. I would never imagine that my first time with a choir performing at National ACDA would be recorded (with masks) for a virtual conference,” said Director of Choral Activities, Jesse Canon.
The ensemble recorded the concert so it can be viewed by more than 10,000 choir directors, performers and exhibitors who attend the annual choral directors’ conference. The 2021 gathering was scheduled for next month in Dallas, but because of the pandemic, has been moved online. This a first-ever national appearance for the Duncanville High School Choral Department.
“The title of our program, ‘The Journey,’ took on a life of its own as these young men performed,” said Mr. Cannon. “Before we started, I told them how tedious this process would be. They not only rose to the occasion, but also have been a source of strength, support and guidance for each other this school year.”
Following an intense audition process, the Duncanville High School Men’s A Cappella Choir was one of 24 ensembles chosen from more than 200 applicants to perform for the conference. Performing Choir Chair Sara Lynn Byrd called the ensemble’s work ‘truly outstanding’ and ‘representative of the high standards of performance required of all groups invited to perform at an ACDA Conference.’
