Message from the Superintendent - STAAR Testing Waived Due to Coronavirus

Dear Duncanville ISD family,

Today Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that he is waiving the STAAR Exam as our communities continue to address the growing impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19). This decision was the right one for our schools, allowing us to focus on the health and safety of our students, families and employees.

Our school leaders and teachers work diligently to prepare our students for the STAAR exam each year. With the health concerns our community is currently facing, there is no way we could expect our students to be in the right mindset for this exam.

I am grateful that the governor and his administration recognized the extraordinary circumstances that our schools face and chose to waive the exam. Governor Abbott is also requesting the suspension of federal testing requirements. We’ll stay tuned for their decision.

Although this week is officially spring break, school district leaders are meeting daily in conference calls and finalizing plans to ensure that students are able to continue receiving instruction even though schools and district offices are closed. You can expect to learn more later this week about what will be available, including meals for students.

Thank you for your patience and partnership.

Sincerely,

Marc Smith
Superintendent
