Seniors Celebrate College Commitment

In a cafeteria filled with balloons, family and friends gathered to celebrate Duncanville High School seniors as they signed their letters of commitment to college.

Duncanville High School has 417 seniors who’ve received college acceptance letters. That group shares almost $4.5 million in academic scholarships.

Jeremiah Lockhart received a scholarship funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that will pay for his undergraduate studies in Engineering at Texas A&M.

He says English teacher Margaret Thomas was key in helping write the best essays for his college applications and scholarships.

Kaitlyn Adrian plans to study at the Paris College of Art where she received a scholarship totaling more than $100,000. She said the scholarship to study in France brought the cost of college more in reach than studying at a similar school in the United States.

“I’m really interested in the artwork and fashion design over there,” Adrian said.

With just a few days left in their high school careers, seniors received a special send-off from high school staff who rewarded them with school supplies, dorm necessities and for a few lucky raffle winners, televisions and laptops.
