When classes begin in August, students who attend Charles Acton Elementary School will start an entirely new experience. The district is creating its first campus-based elementary school of choice and launching the campus as the Charles Acton Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy program will be implemented for all students in the school - grades prekindergarten through fourth grade. It is designed to accelerate all learners with a critical focus on research-based, social/emotional and experiential learning.
Teachers and staff are enrolled in professional development courses this summer to learn the ‘Leader in Me’ curriculum. Students in every grade level will be learning from the program - which is based on the teachings of businessman Stephen Covey who wrote the book, ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.’
Students will be encouraged to take on grade-appropriate leadership opportunities, run their own clubs and complete leadership projects to solve real-world problems.
“My hope for all students is that they believe and know there is a leader in them. Using that leadership is always a choice,” said Charles Acton Leadership Academy Principal Jessica Linwood. “I want them to choose leadership every moment of every day, especially when no one is watching.”
Visitors to campus will notice changes including a new marquee out front and graphics throughout the building focused on the principles from the Leader in Me curriculum.
Parents of Charles Acton Leadership Academy students will have an opportunity to attend an information meeting during Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, July 29 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Enrolled Duncanville ISD elementary students interested in transferring to Charles Acton Leadership Academy should submit an intra-district transfer request. Click here for more information and to fill out the transfer form.
