Dr. Marc Smith joined Duncanville ISD as the Superintendent of Schools in April 2016, after the Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search for the district’s next leader. Dr. Smith recognizes that Duncanville ISD employees, families, and community members are all dedicated to building the legacy of academic excellence that has long been part of this district’s history.                                                                                                                                                                 

During his more than 20 years in education, Dr. Smith has established a reputation of being a focused, strategic educational leader who has a positive record of improving student achievement and effective communication skills that strengthen employee and community support. Upon arrival in Duncanville ISD, Dr. Smith developed and initiated an entry plan focusing on listening and learning the dynamics that make this school district unique. The intensive listening tour has allowed Dr. Smith an opportunity to build upon the attributes that will drive academic achievement to new heights, expand educational programming for students and support the winning traditions that make Duncanville the “City of Champions.”                        

Dr. Smith came to Duncanville ISD from Marshall, where he served as Superintendent from 2012 through 2016. As Superintendent in Marshall ISD, Dr. Smith implemented several academic initiatives and programs as well as provided leadership that led to the passing of a $109.2 million bond in 2015. This historic community vote was the first successful bond program in nearly 30 years in Marshall ISD.                                    

Dr. Smith holds a doctorate degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Prairie View A&M University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Human Performance from Texas Southern University. Additionally, in 2010, he completed the Urban Superintendent Academy at Harvard University.

Dr. Smith is the proud father of three children – two sons and one daughter. His oldest son is a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio, his middle son attends college in Houston, and his daughter is a student at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
A resident of Duncanville, Dr. Smith enjoys travel, music, reading, and all sports.
