Language Acquisition

Department Mission and Goals
The Mission of the Language Acquisition Department is to effectively support our students’ diverse academic, linguistic, and cognitive needs to help them become productive members of our society. Together, we will bring a force of excellence to schools, communities, and families.

The Language Acquisition Department aspires to support the needs of all language learners enrolled in one of our programs. The goals of each program are as follows:

Dual Language

In collaboration with district and campus leaders, as well as instructional staff, the dual language team will support efforts to ensure that Emergent Bilinguals develop bilingualism and biliteracy in both English and Spanish within five to seven years, reach high levels of academic achievement in both languages, and demonstrate sociocultural competence.

English As A Second Language

In collaboration with district and campus leaders, as well as instructional staff, the ESL team will support efforts to develop Emergent Bilinguals’ social and academic English through explicit, content-based language instruction, promote high academic achievement, and foster sociocultural competence.

Language Proficency Assessment Committee

In collaboration with LPAC administrators and chairs, teachers, and parents, the LPAC team will ensure that Emergent Bilinguals are accurately identified and placed in the most appropriate instructional model that best supports academic and linguistic growth. Students are continuously monitored for linguistic progress in both English and their home language (when applicable).

World Languages

In collaboration with district and campus leaders, as well as staff, the world languages team will support students in achieving academic success and language proficiency through meaningful communication, cultural connections, and real-world application. The team will foster sociocultural competence through engagement with diverse communities and perspectives.

Family & Community Engagement

In collaboration with district and campus leaders, as well as staff, the FACE team will foster meaningful, two-way partnerships with families and communities to support student success. The team will inform, empower, and include families through accessible opportunities for collaboration, shared decision-making, and capacity-building in alignment with Title I requirements.
