DUAL LANGUAGE (DL)
Dual Language is the adopted program for Spanish speaking students identified as Emergent Bilinguals in grades PK-6.
THE GOALS OF DUAL LANGUAGE ARE FOR EMERGENT BILINGUALS TO:

Develop bilingualism and bi-literacy in both English and Spanish within five to seven years

Reach high levels of academic achievement in both languages
-
Demonstrate sociocultural competence.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
ESL is the bilingual program for students who are native speakers of another language other than Spanish in grades PK-6. Additionally, the ESL program is also for students in grades 7-12 identified as Emergent Bilinguals regardless of the language they speak.
THE GOALS OF ESL ARE FOR EMERGENT BILINGUALS TO:

Develop social and academic English language proficiency through explicit instruction that promotes thinking, writing, reading, listening, and speaking across all content areas with native language supports and resources

Demonstrate sociocultural competence
WORLD LANGUAGES
Any language other than English, including American Sign Language (ASL), is considered a world language. Students may enroll in LOTE classes, which are electives, in middle school and high school. Duncanville High School offers the following LOTE courses: French, Spanish, Latin, and ASL.
The goals of WORLD LANGUAGE are for participating students to:

Become proficient in using the new language in a variety of contexts and for various purposes

Communicate and make connections and comparisons in the language being learned

Demonstrate sociocultural competence
