Made With Pride February 2025
Each month, Duncanville ISD honors a student, staff member, and teacher who go above and beyond. They are chosen from nominations submitted by coworkers, classmates, or community members. These individuals reflect the excellence and pride of our district, and they are Made with Pride in Duncanville.
MEET SOFIA LERMA: A QUIET LEADER WITH A STRONG IMPACT
Sofia Lerma is a model student in every sense,” says her Kennemer Middle School reading teacher, Shay Hopkins. “Every day, I witness her dedication and quiet strength. She may not be the loudest voice in the room, but her presence is felt in the most meaningful ways.”
Sofia’s impact is evident in the way she approaches learning. She consistently participates in discussions, sharing thoughtful insights that not only enhance conversations but also encourage her classmates to think critically. “She doesn’t just focus on her own success—she genuinely cares about others,” Hopkins explains. “During group activities, she patiently offers guidance, ensuring that every student feels included and supported.”
Her reliability and determination set her apart. “Sofia shines through her willingness to ask or answer questions,” Hopkins adds. “She approaches challenges with a calm, steady focus, never backing down from an opportunity to grow.”
Beyond academics, her kindness and dedication to helping others create a welcoming classroom environment. “She represents everything we hope to see in a student—hardworking, compassionate, and always striving to be her best,” Hopkins says proudly.
With her unwavering commitment to learning and leadership, Sofia truly embodies what it means to be "Made With Pride in Duncanville.
HALLEY BACKUS: A TEACHER WHO INSPIRES
Halley Backus embodies what it means to be ‘Made With Pride in Duncanville,’” says her principal, Dr. Tiffany Staats. “She is an outstanding educator whose passion for students is undeniable.”
As a proud Duncanville High School graduate, Halley returned in 2017 to begin her teaching career. In the past five and a half years, she has become a pillar of support for her students, creating a classroom that is both welcoming and inspiring. “Every morning and after school, her room is filled with students who just want to be around her,” Dr. Staats explains. “That says everything about the relationships she builds.”
Beyond academics, Halley ensures her students feel valued. “She’s always looking out for them—whether it’s offering snacks, providing clothing, or making sure student services are involved when needed,” Dr. Staats shares. “She truly cares about their well-being.”
Her dedication is reflected in her students’ achievements. “Her English II classes outperformed expectations on the EOC STAAR exam—92% of her students reached the Meets and Masters performance level,” Dr. Staats notes. “That’s an incredible accomplishment.”
For all she does, and the heart she brings to DHS, Halley is truly ‘Made With Pride in Duncanville.’”
JAMES FUERTE: Excellence IN CUSTOMER SERVICE
In today’s world, where great customer service is often lacking, I think it’s important to recognize those who go above and beyond,” says Ms. Latrice Walker, a retiring Duncanville ISD employee. “Mr. James Fuerte is one of those people!”
Ms. Walker has relied on James over the past few months to help process her retirement certification, and each interaction has been a testament to his professionalism. “Not once has he rushed a conversation or made me feel like I was just another task on his list,” she shares. “Every time I called, he was patient, thorough, and incredibly kind.”
James, a Payroll Manager in the Busincess Services Departmemt, ensures that every question is answered and every concern is addressed. “He takes the time to explain things in detail, making sure I fully understand each step of the process,” Walker adds. “That kind of patience and dedication isn’t something you find every day.”
His commitment to excellence is evident in even the smallest gestures. “Today, when I spoke to him, he wished me a ‘Merry Christmas!’ It was such a simple act, but it showed just how much he cares,” she says.
James exemplifies what it means to be "Made With Pride in Duncanville" through his kindness, professionalism, and unwavering support for those he serves.
