Medical Management
Duncanville I.S.D. Health Services is committed to providing the highest level of care to meet any special medical needs a student may have. Below are some of the most common medical conditions seen at school.
Life Threatening Allergies/Anaphylaxis (TEC Chapter 38 Section 38.0151)
If your child has a life threatening allergy or is at-risk for a life threatening allergic reaction, he/she should have an Epinephrine Auto-injector at school in the event of an emergency. The school does not stock epinephrine in the event of a life threatening emergency. The following form must be completed by the physician and signed by the physician and parent for the Epinephrine Auto-injector to be kept at school. If your child has a special dietary need at school a Nutrition Services Request Form must be completed by the physician and turned into the Nutrition Department.

Diabetes (HB 984)
State law has provided specific provisions for the care and management of students with diabetes attending public school. The school in conjunction with the parent will develop a personal health plan that will specify the diabetic management and care the student requires while at school. Under HB 984, each school must train other employees to serve as Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistants to provide diabetes management and care services if a nurse is not available when a student needs such services.
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide all medication, supplies and snacks.

The form below must be completed by the physician and signed by the physician and parent before services can be provided at school.
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide all equipment and supplies.
Specialized Health Care Procedures
Seizures
It is very important to contact your child’s school nurse, if he/she has seizures, a history of non-febrile seizures, or is taking seizure medication. Seizure first aid training will be provided to your child’s teachers in case of a seizure episode.
Asthma
Duncanville ISD Health Services takes asthma very seriously. If your child has used his/her rescue inhaler in the past two years, we request that a rescue inhaler and the proper paperwork be available at school. If your child has an episode of asthma while at school and he/she has no medication at school, EMS will be called if we cannot reach the parent/guardian and/or the parent/guardian cannot bring medication immediately and/or their asthma is severe. All medical expenses are the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

If you are wondering whether your child’s asthma is well controlled, answer the following four questions:
Does my child need to use his/her rescue inhaler more than twice a week?
Does my child use more than 2 rescue inhalers each year?
Does my child wake up 2 or more nights per month due to asthma?
Has my child been treated in the emergency room in the past year?
If you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, it is highly recommended he/she see their primary care doctor or asthma/allergy specialist.
