Compulsory Attendance Law & Consequences

Compulsory Attendance Law & Consequences

  • Texas Law requires students 6–19 to attend school unless exempt.
    • Prekindergarten & Kindergarten: If you voluntarily enroll your child in PK or kindergarten before age 6, all attendance laws apply to them as well.
  • Court Referrals can be triggered by 10+ unexcused absences in 6 months.
  • Below 90% triggers possible credit denial; below 75% requires an Attendance Appeal.

Tips to Improve Attendance

  1. Schedule appointments outside school hours.
  2. Notify the attendance office promptly if your child is ill.
  3. Arrive on time every day.
  4. Encourage consistent bedtime routines.
  5. Ask for help from counselors/teachers if attendance is an issue.
