Philosophy of education

I take an innovative approach to education as it relates to teaching 21st century lessons. As a Publications/Audio Visual advisor and district communications liaison, I am very active in the use of social media as I recognize this is the quickest and easiest way to reach out to an educational community and supply them with up to date information about what is happening within the walls of the school and district. I love finding innovative ways to promote our school through all forms of media by using students from our high school programs.

I have the  ability to connect the school with media outlets in an effort to showcase the positive activities our students are involved in during their classroom experiences. I am able to effectively build relationships with colleagues as I assist them with implementing 21st century learning in their classrooms.

About Me:

I am in my 10th year as a teacher at Duncanville High School.  This year I took over the Audio Visual Program at the school, where students are obtaining cutting-edge tools to be competitive in peer-level contests as well as the industry. Students in my program will be able to receive certifications in all of the Adobe publishing and video editing software prior to graduation. Under my direction, students will produce a weekly broadcast including the current happenings at Duncanville High School. I have also served as the advisor of both Panther Prints, the student-produced online newspaper as well as the Panther Tale yearbook.

Over the course of my 14 years of teaching publications, students have won multiple national and state awards including the Association of Texas Photo Instructors top sports photos, NSPA best sports photo awards, Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Contest Photo portfolio and Individual awards in nearly every writing and photography category. As a UIL journalism team advisor, I have assisted students in wining the UIL State Journalism overall team award as well as multiple awards in the Texas Association of Journalism Educators clip contest,Texas Press Women High School Journalism contest and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association contest. Students have also won numerous Tops in Texas Awards from ILPC. As an advisor my student newspapers have been nominated for multiple National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker awards, CSPA Crown awards and ILPC Star Awards for newspaper, website and yearbook. My student newspapers have also won the Quill and Scroll's prestigious George Gallup Award. In 2010 I received the Edith Fox King Award for Excellence in Journalism Education. I was most recently named as one of four recipients of the Spirit of Champion Award for Duncanville ISD.
