Byrd Middle School Band

The Byrd Band is one of the most successful middle school band programs in the state of Texas, earning the distinction of being selected as the TMEA Honor Band three times, in 1983, 2005, and 2009. The Byrd Symphonic I and Symphonic II bands have earned sweepstakes at UIL contest every year for over thirty years, and have been named the Grand Champions at the Beach Within Reach contest seven times. Byrd also has more students make the All-Region band each year than any other school in Region 20.
Russell Porter, Head Director
Mr. Porter directs the Byrd Symphonic I Band, and has been a band director for thirteen years. Prior to working in Duncanville, Mr. Porter worked in Birdville ISD at Richland Middle School, where his bands earned many distinctions and awards including a Superior rating at the Peak Music Festival in 2015, 9th place in the TMEA Honor Band contest in 2015, and two-time Grand Champions at Beach Within Reach. Mr. Porter received his degree in Music Education from the University of Houston, and is a Duncanville High School graduate. He currently lives in Duncanville with his wife and four children.
Lorna Quintanar, Assistant Director
Ms. Quintanar directs the Symphonic II Band, and is in her fourth year as a band director at Byrd. Prior to working in Duncanville, Ms. Quintanar was an Elementary Music Specialist in Garland ISD. Ms. Quintanar received her degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas, and is also a Duncanville High School graduate. She currently lives in Dallas with her fiance and dog, Rusty.
Michelle Casso, Assistant Director
Ms. Casso directs the Byrd Symphonic III Band, and will begin her first year at Byrd. Prior to working in Duncanvilel, Ms. Casso band directed in Burleson ISD at Hughes Middle School. Ms. Casso received her degree in Music Education from West Texas A&M University. She currently lives in Grand Praire with her cat, Rowdy.
