Mrs. Leigh Harrison

I am excited to teach at Duncanville High School. My hope is that all students leave my classroom with a better understanding of how to develop creative ideas, solve problems and manage time as well as the discipline of art and art history.

I welcome all students to my classroom and believe everyone can learn and grow.

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for."

-- Georgia O'Keeffe

  • It Takes Courage to Draw

Posted by Leigh Harrison on 9/27/2019 8:00:00 AM

I see this everyday -- students hesitate, look at their phone, talk to their neighbor or even act out -- anything to divert attention to the fact that they either don't know where to begin or they believe that they do not draw well and so they shouldn't do it. This is where I can help. I come alongside them and encourage them to break down what they see into shapes they know how to draw. Make a mark, put together shapes and keep doing it. Over time, they are drawing better than they were and it looks familiar. But it takes courage to begin this journey and to continue this journey when the first evidence of work doesn't look like they want it to look. I enjoy watching students be couragous everyday -- doing things that don't feel comfortable at first, but then continue doing them until they do become somewhat to very comfortable. It is an incredible part of my job!
