Duncanville ISD is a District of Innovation 

Texas Education Code, Chapter 12A

Passed during the 84^th Legislative Session, Texas Education Code, Chapter 12A allows Texas school districts to pursue the designation of ‘District of Innovation’, a provision that enables traditional independent school districts to access many of the flexibilities that are currently available to open-enrollment charter schools.  Through the development and approval of a ‘Local Innovation Plan’, a district may obtain certain exemptions from the Texas Education Code.

District of Innovation Renewal

Duncanville Independent School District became a District of Innovation on May 8, 2017, when the District’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the Local Innovation Plan. The term of the Local Innovation Plan continued for five years and was reviewed by the District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC) on February 28, 2022.  In accordance with the law, it was amended and renewed.  The DEIC will review the plan annually to ensure that it continues to support the needs of the District. If the Committee recommends changes, the Plan would be amended in the manner required by law.

 

If approved by the Board, the term of the Local Innovation Plan will begin April 12, 2022 and will end on April 11, 2027, unless terminated, amended, and/or renewed in accordance with the law.  To view the proposed plan click here.

 

District of Innovation Implementation Timeline

February 14, 2022 – Board of Trustees received a District of Innovation information update that explained the renewal process and timeline.

February 28, 2022 – The District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC) met to review the current plan and consider additional innovations.

March 11, 2022 – The Local Innovation Plan that was approved by the DEIC was posted to the district’s website.

March 22, 2022 – A letter of intent to renew the Local Innovation Plan will be submitted to the Commissioner of Education.

April 11, 2022 – The Board of Trustees will vote on the renewed Local Innovation Plan.

May 8, 2017 - Board of Trustees unanimously passed the District of Innovation Plan after a presentation further explaining the process, committee feedback and next steps.

April 24, 2017 -District of Innovation Advisory Committee considered, discussed and approved a final version of the District of Innovation Plan with a majority vote. The meeting minutes can be viewed here. 

April 8, 2017 - Proposed District of Innovation Plan was posted to the website and shared publicly for feedback.

March 23, 2017 - District of Innovation Advisory Committee received a presentation defining the proposed plan.

March 20, 2017- Public Hearing held during the regular board meeting and presentation provided. 

Feb 13, 2017- Information presentation provided to the Board of Trustees at regular meeting.
