A “Board Business” summary is published on the district website following each regular school board meeting convened by the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees. School board members hosted a regular board meeting on January 23, 2022. A video recording of the meeting will be available on the district website under Board of Trustees.
Duncanville ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report by sharing that Fairmeadows Elementary School teacher, Mrs. Coleman has invited him to Fairmeadows each year to visit our youngest learners. The Pre-K students were learning about community helpers and they had lots of questions for Dr. Smith: what do you do as superintendent, what does a school board do, does he drink coffee, and how old he is? Dr. Smith also visited the students in Mrs. Rosero’s and Ms. Cardenas’s classrooms.
The Duncanville HS choir performed at the historic St. John’s Cathedral in New York City. DHS Choral Department’s Mr. Doucet and Mr. Johnson are doing a spectacular job in exposing our students to amazing once-in-lifetime experiences. While in New York, students participated in a musical theater workshop with Broadway performers, attended two musical theater performances, and toured several historic sites.
Dr. Smith shared a legislative update about the 88th Texas Legislative Session highlighting that to date there were over 300 Education bills that have been filed with more to be introduced.
The district leadership team has met with the staff leaders from Senator Royce West, Representative Yvonne Davis, and Representative Carl Sherman to share the Board’s priorities. Dr. Smith will continue to receive weekly legislative updates and have opportunities to share district priorities. The Board will be updated on priority bills and any potential impact on the district.
DHS Makes the All-State: Band and Choir
Exciting things continue to happen in the Duncanville Band and Choral Department. Three DHS Band students and six DHS Choirstudents will represent Duncanville ISD at the Texas Music Educators Association as All-State Musicians. Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition are selected to become All-State musicians! These students were chosen through a competitive process at the TMEA Area competitions held this year across the state at District, Region, and Area levels. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive and they qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group.
Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees Appreciation
January is School Boards Appreciation month, in Duncanville ISD we recognize the hard work and dedication of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Smith publicly recognized the Board of Trustees sharing, “Duncanville ISD is blessed to have such a cohesive and collaborative Board that prioritizes students and our staff. You represent us well in the community and you make decisions that are in the best interest of children.”
Several district elementary students participated in this year’s recognition in a very special video tribute. The Board of Trustees received a commemorative 2023-2024 customized calendar.
The Duncanville ISD community donated clothing items and food valued over $1500 to the Panther Pantry. We are grateful to them for their continuous support of our schools and students.
