Three Duncanville ISD school board members successfully ran in the May 7 elections to continue serving the school district. Incumbents Jacqueline Culton (place 1), Phil McNeely (place 2) and Janet Veracruz (place 3) all retained their respective seats and will continue to serve as trustees for the next three years. During the May school board meeting, Ms. Culton and Mr. McNeely were sworn in. Ms. Veracruz was not able to attend the meeting and will be sworn in at a later date.
In addition, new officers were chosen. Mr. McNeely was elected school board president. Cassandra Phillips will serve as vice president. Carla Fahey is the school board secretary.
Following the transition, Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith presented previous school board president Janice Savage-Martin with a crystal award and expressed his appreciation to her for doing “an outstanding job leading the board through a very challenging year.”
Newly Announced District Teacher Recognized
During the annual Employee Appreciation Event, multiple employee groups were recognized – retirees, service award recipients, Spirit of a Champion award winners and all of the Campus Teachers of the Year. One of the highlights of the evening was also the announcement of the 2022 Elementary and Secondary District Teachers of the Year, who will serve as ambassadors throughout the next school year. The two District Teachers of the Year are Jessica Thomas, Elementary District Teacher of the Year from Charles Acton Leadership Academy, and Myronda Mays, Secondary District Teacher of the Year from the STEAM Academy at Kennemer Middle School.
Trustees Celebrate the Inspiring Leadership Academy Class of 2022
The Inspiring Leadership Academy’s Class of 2022 completed their yearlong training last week and the group was recognized before the school board for participating in the professional development program focused on developing leaders within Duncanville ISD. In the past three years, ILA members have advanced their careers at home with the hiring of 5 principals 5 assistant principals, 3 teacher specialists and 3 District Teachers of the Year.
Duncanville ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith provides information about recent events in the school district. He opened his report this month by discussing the Superintendent Roundtable meeting, where he regularly meets with staff members, parents, and community members to provide an update and gather feedback from various stakeholders. The group learned about district funding, budget, the impact of the pandemic, accomplishments, and future initiatives on the calendar. Dr. Smith expressed that he appreciates the collaboration with the collective group and the insight they provide.
The Duncanville ISD Teaching and Learning Center officially opened last week following a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of the building renovation. The school board approved the renovation project in January 2000, the timing of which made it possible for the project to come in under budget as there has been a nationwide rise in material costs over the past two years. Dr. Smith expressed his pride that the project was completed under budget, saving the school district approximately $260,000. The Curriculum and Instruction Department will work out of the Teaching and Learning Center, where the focus will be about developing teachers so they can provide their best to students.
Dr. Smith also reported that 170 Duncanville High School students graduated from Dallas College last week with their associate degree or industry certification. This accomplishment helps students to transition beyond high school and into their future careers.
