The vibrant spirit of community came together once again at the Fifth Annual Family and Community Multicultural Fair, held in Duncanville ISD. Inspired by the district’s rich cultural diversity, the event showcased the beautiful mosaic of over 40 countries and 21 languages represented within our schools. Families from all walks of life united to celebrate their unique cultures and connect in a shared space of joy and learning.

A Growing Tradition of Inclusion
Now in its fifth year, the Multicultural Fair has become a beloved tradition in Duncanville ISD. What began as a way to honor the district’s diverse student body has blossomed into an annual event that continues to foster a sense of belonging, community, and cultural appreciation.

“The fair allows families to share and celebrate their cultures, while also strengthening school-family partnerships,” said María Lucía Hernández, Director of Language Acquisition.  “Strong family engagement is tied to higher academic achievement, and events like this create that vital connection.”

A Celebration of Diverse Cultures
This year’s theme was a true reflection of the community’s values—a celebration of diverse cultures. The fair featured a rich array of cultural displays, performances, food, and activities that transported attendees to different corners of the world.

Families had the chance to engage in hands-on activities like making Hawaiian leis, crafting African-inspired necklaces, and creating beautiful tissue paper flowers—a nod to cultural traditions spanning the globe. In addition to these activities, community organizations were on hand to provide valuable information and services, while food vendors delighted guests with flavors from around the world.

A Collaborative District-Wide Effort
The Multicultural Fair was a district-wide effort, with students and families from all Duncanville ISD campuses invited to participate. Contributions came from various departments, including Career and Technical Education (CTE), Special Education, Early Childhood, and more. Schools such as Merrifield, Smith, Central, DHS, Hyman, and Hastings were particularly involved, ensuring a wide range of voices and cultures were represented. Special thanks were given to the administrators who supported the event, including Mr. Allen, Ms. Parker, Dr. Jones, and Ms. Robinson, as well as Hastings for graciously hosting the event.

Engaging the Community
The event was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the community. It was clear that the fair resonated deeply with families, as they engaged in every aspect of the event, from cultural activities to dance performances. Guests from a variety of community organizations, including UT Arlington, UNT Dallas, AT&T, and local health providers, joined in the celebration, further strengthening the ties between the district and the broader community.

Cultural Performances and Global Cuisine
One of the highlights of the fair was the impressive lineup of dance performances. Both students and community members showcased their talents through traditional and contemporary dances from various cultures. These performances added energy and authenticity to the event, making it a truly immersive experience.

Food was another key feature of the fair. Attendees had the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes from across the globe, including delicious offerings from Vietnam, which brought the diverse culinary traditions of different countries to life.

A Learning Experience for All
The fair wasn’t just about enjoying food and performances—it was a valuable learning experience. Students and families gained a deeper appreciation for the cultural diversity within the community. They learned about global traditions, values, and histories, reinforcing the idea that our differences are to be celebrated, not just tolerated.

Impact on the School District’s Culture
The goal of the Multicultural Fair is to foster a sense of belonging, respect, and pride among all students and families. By celebrating cultural diversity, the district strengthens its culture and enhances academic success. Research shows that when students feel valued and recognized, their engagement improves, leading to higher achievement and greater graduation rates.

“We hope this event has lasting impacts,” said Superintendent Dr. T. Lamar Goree. “It’s about creating meaningful connections between our schools and families, strengthening trust, and fostering collaboration. These efforts are all part of our mission to create the best possible educational experience for our students.”

The Rewarding Experience of Connection
For those who helped organize the event, the most rewarding part was witnessing the genuine joy and connection the fair brought to families. “It’s powerful to see students light up when they share their culture, and to watch families feel truly seen and valued,” shared Ms. Hernandez. “This event helps build bridges and strengthens the sense of community, which, in turn, supports student achievement and engagement.”

The Fifth Annual Family and Community Multicultural Fair was an unforgettable celebration of diversity and unity. It not only celebrated the cultures that make up Duncanville ISD but also created lasting connections that will continue to benefit students, families, and the community for years to come.
