Duncanville High School hosted its Fine Arts Singing Day on Monday, May 20th in the Shine Auditorium. Thirteen students chose their prospective schools and made commitments. As their names were announced, each student came up on stage and signed their names. They were surrounded by parents, family members, and teachers with their fellow students in the crowd.

“Having a Fine Arts Signing Day for me is very important,” says Senior Joshua Retiz, majoring in Trumpet Performance at The New England Conservatory. Joshua is thankful his department’s signing day has a district-wide audience.  “We are getting recognition for all the hard work we have done. It really can go under the rug to other people outside of fine arts. So this is very important to me.”

Fellow senior and theater student Monyette Whitlock agrees. “You see the athletes all over the world signing those big contracts, so having the opportunity to do something similar to that, sheds light on our talented students here,” explains Monyette. On a lark, he made his decision in one day. “I want to go to TCU, majoring in Theatre specializing in acting. I went there today and made my college decision today.”

Fine Arts Director Paul Doucet is proud of his students. His pride extends to wanting to honor and highlight their achievement in committing to a college. This day is important to him. “I am glad that we were able to honor our students at Fine Arts Singing Day, signifying the importance of their hard work, their dedication, and their perseverance through their time at Duncanville High School,” says Doucet.

Doucet believes district educators prepared and inspired students to choose the arts as a major and career choice. “Duncanville ISD recognizes the importance of arts education and has done an amazing job at preparing our students to be accepted into some of the most prestigious universities across this country.”
