Nutrition Services Joins Texas' Farm Fresh Challenge
Updated
October starts the Texas Department of Agriculture’s 'Farm Fresh Challenge.' Duncanville ISD will participate in this year’s challenge as it has in the past. Annually, this event highlights Texas schools and childcare centers serving Texas-grown products and adding agriculture to the curriculum.
“This challenge brings a healthy twist to the nutritious meals provided at school by serving locally sourced foods. The District will be featuring rainbow carrots, Cantaloupe, multi-colored cherry tomatoes, and roasted purple potatoes,” says Tracey Marcum, Director of Nutrition Services.
The department will show its locally sourced produce purchased from Walnut Creek Farms in Alvarado weekly. See the dates and times below.
- October 9th: JR Farms will present the benefits of microgreens to culinary students at DHS (tentative time 1 p.m.).
- October 21st: Texas Farm Bureau Mobile Learning Barn will be at Merrifield Elementary from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. to teach students about agriculture
- October 25th: Nutrition Services will provide samples of freshly made wraps containing locally sourced microgreens from JR Family Farms
