Board of Trustees Approve Virtual Learning Districtwide for Start of School

Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees approves Virtual Learning districtwide for the first four weeks of school

Starting with the first day of school on Tuesday, Sept, 8, all Duncanville ISD students will begin districtwide in the Virtual Learning program. Students – including those who committed to In-Person Learning during enrollment - will be virtual for the first four weeks of school. All students enrolled in prekindergarten through eighth grade will be in the Virtual Learning program. A limited number of Duncanville High School students, whose courses require in-person training and access to technology and equipment that can only be provided on campus, will participate in a hybrid model that will include both Virtual Learning and In-Person Learning.

Over the next month, the district will continue to evaluate the data related to COVID-19 to determine how to proceed in October at the conclusion of the first four weeks of school.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report with a summary of the Virtual Town Hall hosted by a Duncanville City Councilman on July 25. Dr. Smith was invited to participate and discussed the district’s School Reopening Plan with the more than 300 attendees. Dr. Smith had the opportunity to address questions and listen to feedback from parents and teachers in attendance.

The annual leadership retreat known as Camp Panther went virtual this year. District principals, directors and other district leaders honed in on this year’s theme – “One Team. One Mission. One Heart.” At a time when social distancing is critical, it was important to set the tone for the upcoming school year that we are still in this together.

Dr. Smith welcomed 190 new educators to Duncanville ISD during new teacher orientation, a three-day training that was also held virtually. The new teachers were introduced to district leaders and learned more about the district, which is proudly known as the City of Champions. Campus staff held a drive through celebration and handed out swag bags to their new teachers.

The start of the school year always begins with a convocation kick off to set the tone for the year. Dr. Smith will carry forward the “One Team. One Mission. One Heart.” theme that was introduced at Camp Panther. This year, each campus and department will remain at their respective facility to watch a video rather than the usual districtwide gathering. The video will be hosted by the 2020 District Elementary Teacher of the Year Adam Conant and the 2019 District Secondary Teacher of the Year Luzviminda Pascasio.

Dr. Smith concluded his report with the Duncanville ISD Reopening Series hosted by the Family and Communication Engagement (F.A.C.E.) department. The series includes three upcoming information virtual sessions about the School Reopening Plan that parents can attend to learn more about what the school year will look like. Spanish translation will be provided.
