District Gears Up for First Day of School: Aug. 2
Duncanville ISD is looking forward to welcoming its students in person this school year, which begins on Monday, Aug. 2. The early start to the school year will provide more instructional time with students to accelerate learning, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The district has outlined processes and protocols to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all staff and students, including disinfecting high touch areas and surfaces, occasional temperature checks and continuing social distancing where possible.
The governor of Texas has prohibited public schools from requiring face masks to be worn. However, we strongly encourage the use of face masks on school property. Campuses will continue to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms through campus clinics and school nurses. Rapid testing for COVID-19 will continue to be available for all district employees during the 2021-2022 school year.
Federal Emergency Relief Funding to Address District Needs
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund is authorized by Congress to address the needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Texas Education Agency will administer the funding to Duncanville ISD in three phases, totaling approximately $25 million. The district intends to use the funds to pay for learning acceleration, safety and health, infrastructure improvements and teacher recruitment and retention. Superintendent’s Report
Duncanville ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report with a recap of New Teacher Induction that was held the week of July 12. The three-day event welcomes teachers who are new to the district. The goal is to introduce the new teachers, whether they are new to education or are experienced, to the culture and vision of Duncanville ISD. Dr. Smith said he saw excited teachers who are ready to welcome students back to school on Monday, Aug. 2.
Convocation is Wednesday, July 28 and will be the official kickoff to the new school year for all district employees. In order to social distance, Convocation will be divided into three sessions for different groups of employees. Staff will enjoy an inspiring presentation from speaker Robert Jackson as we get ready to start the school year.
Dr. Smith concluded his report with the exciting news that the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees has been selected as the 2021-2022 Region 10 School Board of the Year. Region 10 is one of the largest education service centers in the state with 130 school districts. The recognition is a testament to the hard work our board members are doing to support our students, staff and the community.
