Leadership Southwest Group at Duncanville High School
Dr. Smith was pleased to announce that Leadership Southwest hosted a class day in Duncanville High School was the site of this year's event. The guests had an opportunity to hear from DHS' Agriculture program led by teacher, Elizabeth Gant, and the Computer Science program led by, Tracy Waller. In addition to playing with the robots our students built, our guests were able to take home eggs that our chickens hatched.
National Principal's Month
Dr. Smith celebrated October being National Principals Month. After the classroom teacher, the campus leader is the most important school-related factor in educating students. We are proud to have this outstanding group leading our schools. Thank you, principals, for all that you do. It is a privileged to have each campus leader in Duncanville ISD.
Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month
Dr. Smith celebrated and acknowledged National Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Subsequently, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16, and September 18, respectively. Many of our campuses held celebrations to recognize the rich cultures of Hispanics and their contributions to society.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Dr. Smith acknowledged October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Noting that unfortunately, we all can think of someone impacted by this disease. Statistics show that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime. D'Ville Alum and DHS basketball star Tiffany Jackson who died from breast cancer was remembered.
