Due to the current nationwide health pandemic, all district facilities and schools are closed and a Learning At Home system has been developed. To continue those health and safety standards, the Board of Trustees hosted their regular board meeting using a video conference call on Monday, April 20, 2020 and can be viewed here. Information shared and decisions made during that meeting include the following:

“Made With Pride in Duncanville” Honorees Recognized

This month’s “Made with Pride in Duncanville” honorees include student Jonathan Arias, teacher Elizabeth Thompson, and staff member Laurie Strueby.

Jonathan Arias is a seventh grade student at Byrd Middle School and was nominated by his choir teacher Alex Lopez. Jonathan was selected for both the Region 20 Honor Band and Choir and has become a pro at time management, as a result. On November 8, Jonathan’s parents drove him to Waxahachie for a choir clinic and concert, drove back to Duncanville for a band chair test then back to Waxahachie to finish rehearsal and perform that evening. He is in the honor roll and has proven to be a leader and motivator in the classroom.

Teacher Elizabeth Thompson has been the Duncanville High School Sparklers coach for seven years and was nominated by her student Jazmine Zamora. Jazmine said Ms. Thompson encourages the Sparklers to work hard and have fun. A few months ago, they performed a challenging routine with the Dallas Mavericks dancers during halftime at a basketball game and cheered on runners at the Heart of Duncanville 5K.

Laurie Strueby is a speech language pathologist at Hyman Elementary School. Ms. Strueby was nominated by a Hyman parent because of the growth she's seeing in her child's speech. At first, Ms. Strueby’s student was sad to leave home to come to school every day, but he was willing to step outside his comfort zone because of how much he enjoys Ms. Strueby's class. Thank you, Ms. Strueby, for nurturing and encouraging your students to overcome challenges.
