Board Business - October 20, 2020

The Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees hosted a regular board meeting on October 19, 2020. A video recording of the meeting can be viewed on the district website under Board of Trustees.  Information shared and decisions made during that meeting include the following:

District Custodians Recognized for Essential Work in District

Earlier this month, Duncanville ISD celebrated National Custodial Workers Day. Our district custodians deserve recognition all year because of their dedication and commitment to caring for our families. While many people remained home in the spring and summer, the custodial team was on the front line ensuring our facilities were regularly sanitized anytime a person entered one of our buildings. Lead custodians Amarilys Saez, Jackie West and Charles Eaton attended the board meeting to be recognized on behalf of the entire custodial team. We thank them for continuing to keep our building clean for our students, staff and visitors.

Superintendent’s Report

Duncanville ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report with a recap of the second first day of school. Students who chose In-Person Learning at the beginning of the school year returned to their campus on Monday for this first time since March. Dr. Smith spoke with NBC5 at Hastings Elementary School and visited campuses throughout the day.

Dr. Smith expressed appreciation for the district’s teachers as part of World Teachers’ Day, which was on Monday, Oct. 5. Their hard work does not go unnoticed and we celebrate our teachers every day for their dedication to student success. October is also National Principals Month, and throughout the month the district has been releasing videos with words of affirmation and gratitude from teachers and staff for each principal. The Board of Trustees and campus staff have also been celebrating principals with gifts and lots of surprises.

Hispanic Heritage Month started September 15 and ended October 15. During that time, the district featured a Hispanic alumnus whose love for soccer led him to play professionally and then become an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Even though students were not physically in the classroom during Hispanic Heritage Month, campuses recognized the importance of celebrating diversity and held various events during the month. Duncanville High School displayed traditional Spanish clothing including folklorico dresses and Fairmeadows Elementary School featured staff spotlights on social media about why they love their Hispanic culture.

Duncanville ISD’s partnership with the National Math and Science Initiative and Texas Instruments paid off for 63 high school students. They were awarded $6,000 in checks for earning a score of 3 or higher on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams in English language arts and reading, math, science and computer science. The students were celebrated with a drive-by check pick up at Duncanville High School. The money comes from a $750,000-grant over a three-year period.

Dr. Smith concluded his reported telling the board about a generous donation of $100,000 from the Duncanville ISD Education Foundation. The Education Foundation presented the district with a check last week to go toward supporting student technology needs. The Education Foundation will continue supporting students and teachers through a giving campaign that will begin with a fundraising event to raffle a convertible 2007 Chrysler Crossfire.
