Board Business - September 22, 2020

The Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees hosted a regular board meeting on September 21, 2020. Due to the current nationwide health pandemic, district facilities and schools remain closed to the public and this meeting was conducted through video conferencing. A video recording of the meeting can be viewed on the district website under Board of Trustees.  Information shared and decisions made during that meeting include the following:

Board Extends Virtual Learning and Announces In-Person Learning Start Date for Limited Students

At this month’s regular meeting, the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees voted to extend Virtual Learning beyond the first four weeks of school and announced plans to welcome back students who previously chose In-Person Learning. The in-person start date for that limited number of students will be Monday, Oct. 19.

We recognize that engaging with students in person is best for students, which is why we are taking steps to phase-in a safe return of students to a traditional classroom setting. The district also continues to monitor COVID-19 data provided by Dallas County Health and Human Services. Over the past few weeks, Dallas County has seen numbers trend in a positive direction.

When In-Person Learning begins Oct. 19, approximately 30 percent of our students will return based on their learning choice during the enrollment process. The majority of students will continue with virtual learning due to the learning choice previously selected.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith waves to students during a live session of the first day of school.

Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report with the first day of school. The district kicked off the school year on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with Virtual Learning only. Students are learning at home from their teachers who are in the classroom. Dr. Smith visited several campuses and even joined in on some of our teacher’s live class sessions.

Dr. Smith provided an update on enrollment and attendance. There are approximately 11,700 students currently enrolled and attendance was approximately 93 percent during the first week of school. Attendance is expected to continue increasing.

The Technology Department prepares for device distribution.

The Technology Department worked diligently and spent months preparing for the first day of school and provide technology resources for families. Loaner devices and hotspots were distributed before the start of the school year and a technology hotline was set up with volunteers and Spanish speakers to assist families with troubleshooting. Despite a few setbacks with technology on the first day of school, students were able to log in and participate in Virtual Learning.

Dr. Smith concluded his report with a newly created COVID-19 dashboard that documents active cases in the school district. We are committed to providing thorough communication and transparency and will be updating the dashboard at the end of every school day. The webpage includes the total number of students and staff currently with lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 cases. It also shows the total number of active cases at each campus and the district office. Learn more about the dashboard here.
