The Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees and Operation Warm share some of the same beliefs. Both organizations believe every child deserves warmth, confidence, and hope from a new coat. "It is hard to fathom a student may not have a coat on a cold, windy Duncanville Day," says Carla Fahey, Place 7 Trustee.
The student coat drive is a mission by the board's desire to give the students it serves dignity. "A new coat is more than just a winter essential-- it's a symbol of warmth, security, and confidence," explains Cassandra Phillips, Place 5 Trustee. "When students feel comfortable, they can focus better on learning and thriving in school."
Fellow board member Phil McNeely, Place 2, agrees and expresses that giving students a coat is part of their school education. "I believe that it is important to educate the “whole” child. Our annual coat drive is just another tool for Duncanville ISD to ensure that our students can “write their own success stories one student at a time.” This is just another way the board works to provide for the students they serve.
The deadline to donate is Friday, October 25th. The goal is $5,000. "We are providing coats to students who might not otherwise have a coat of their own to keep them warm during the cold," says Board Vice President and Place 1 Trustee Jacqueline Culton. "Providing students with coats recognizes their humanity and indicates the district's concern for the student's well-being."
