As a community, we’ve made it through a very challenging week. Everyone’s experience with last week’s winter storm was different, but we know many of you suffered from a lack of power, heat, water or food for several days and some of you are still trying to recover. As you continue to work on restoring order to your households and classrooms, we are here to support our students and staff.
There are quite a few unsung heroes who should be acknowledged for working through the storm and making it possible for us to get back to the business of education this week. The district's Maintenance and Custodial teams worked diligently last week to check on buildings, assess damage and make repairs to facilities impacted by the freezing temperatures.
Kennemer Middle and Fairmeadows Elementary schools were two of the buildings that saw the most damage due to frozen pipes that ruptured and required immediate repairs so we could return. Further work will need to be done - particularly at Kennemer where one gym and the library suffered extensive water damage.
Other members of our staff were responsible for some bright spots in an otherwise difficult time.

One of the district’s social workers made a special trip to deliver food to some of the homeless students and their families who have been living in hotels because they currently don’t have a permanent home.

When contacted by Charlton Methodist Medical Center about a need for milk, our Nutrition Services Department donated 1,400 cartons of milk that would have otherwise expired before students and staff returned to school this week.

The Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees organized a drive to collect gift cards and non-perishable food donations for the school district families impacted by a fire at the Green Townhomes last week.
The kindness and compassion that represented our schools and community were on display through this very challenging week. We continue to come together where the need is the greatest to show why #WeAreDville.
