For some students, a love of learning starts with a good book. Duncanville ISD is launching a districtwide reading initiative to encourage students and families to “Read Across the ‘Ville.” This districtwide literacy event provides a free book to students and includes a live virtual event aimed at celebrating the joy of reading.
“Read Across the 'Ville” launches with the gift of a free book on Friday, April 30 from 4 - 7 p.m. Students as young as prekindergarten and as mature as high school seniors are invited to pick up a free book at Duncanville High School’s main entrance at the corner of Camp Wisdom Rd. and Cedar Ridge Dr.
The drive-through free book pick-up will also include a popcorn snack for each student. The goal is to distribute 3,000 free books in an effort to make reading accessible for students in their own homes.
“Read Across the ‘Ville” continues with a live virtual event on Monday, May 3 starting at 6:30 p.m. Tune into the Duncanville ISD YouTube Channel using this link to find out what some of our students are reading, listen to read-alouds with district leaders and hear from young adult authors Cheryl King and Neil Schusterman.
Anyone can win prizes during the live event by posting comments in response to the giveaways during the live YouTube broadcast.
“Read Across the ‘Ville” is a new literacy program launched through the partnership of the Duncanville ISD English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) Department and Library Services aimed at connecting with students through reading stories while taking into account the safety measures in place.
