Six Choral Students Hit High Note with All-State Honors
All State Choir Students

Duncanville High School’s choral department is continuing its tradition of excellence by sending six students to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Clinic and Convention.

Each year more than 70,000 high school students from across the state of Texas begin the All-State audition process. Ultimately just 1,800 students, fewer than three percent, are chosen to rehearse and perform at the annual TMEA convention in various bands, orchestras and choirs.

Those attending the virtual convention this year from Duncanville High School are freshman Jeffrey Berry, junior Juan Rios, and seniors Haylee Jenkins, Daniela Pedraja, Quinton Prater and Jeroham Ortega.

The audition process this year was altered due to the ongoing pandemic. Instead of in-person performances as students are accustomed to, auditions were recorded by students and reviewed virtually by judges.

Duncanville High School Head Choral Director Jesse Cannon said he is proud of his students’ accomplishments.

“Despite the innumerable challenges encountered throughout this school year, our 2021 All-Staters remained committed to their personal musical development,” Mr. Cannon said. “They demonstrated the very perseverance and dedication that we know ongoing participation in our music program fosters."

In the last four years, Duncanville High School has sent a total of 22 students to the state convention.
