Students Take Raw Materials from Pasture to Product

Wool Project

Students in the Agriculture and Fashion Design programs at Duncanville High School recently learned how to process wool to create a product.

Using wool donated by Camp Ascend of Dallas, students spent three consecutive Mondays learning and practicing the basics of wool production.

Under the supervision of Mary Berry from Fancy Fibers of Farmersville, students cleaned the wool to remove debris and lanolin. They then turned the fiber into thread using spinning wheels and other equipment. Once that was finished, they wove the thread into small tapestries to create coasters and bookmarks.

Students told instructors they enjoyed the hands-on experience after a year where most learning was less interactive.
