The Health Science Program at Byrd Middle School

The Health Science Program at Byrd Middle School is for students who are interested in learning more about careers in Health Science. Students in the program will be cohorted through their CTE courses student experiences will be provided such as labs, field trips, competitions, related to Health Science college and careers.  This program leads into the Health Science Pathway at Duncanville High School, and by participating in this program, students will be prepared for success in the high school program. Health Science Program Student Courses:

Students will take the core classes (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) like all students on the campus.  Students in the Business & Technology Program at Reed MS will take two CTE courses during their 7th-grade year and up to 2 CTE courses during their 8th-grade year.  Please note: students in band or choir in grade 7 will only take one CTE course and students in band/choir and athletics in grade 8 will only take 1 CTE course.  The CTE courses will be for students in the Choice Program only.

Students will have the opportunity to earn high school credit while in middle school.  Students will also have the opportunity to compete at the local, state, and national levels in CTE clubs.

Health Science Program students will take the following CTE courses next year: 

In grade 7, students in the program will take two semester-long Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses that will earn the 7th grader .5 high school credits. The two PLTW courses that all students in the Health Science Program will take are the following:

Medical Detectives:  (One Semester)

Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, dissect a sheep brain, investigate disease outbreaks, and explore how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction.

Design & Modeling: (One Semester)

Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit to design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy.

The other CTE course that students will take in grade 7 is Career Investigations with a focus on Health Science.  Students will be exposed to Health Science Colleges & Careers through field trips, guest speakers, and clubs.  

Students will participate in CTE Clubs and competitions in the area of Health Science.
