Board of Trustees Meeting Summary

Every month the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees convenes a regular meeting to publicly address the business of the school district. Meetings are held at the Duncanville ISD Education Plaza (710 S. Cedar Ridge Drive). A highlight of board decisions at this month’s meeting on Monday, October 15, 2018 includes the following:

Board Approves Hire of Campus Support Leader

Joseph Copeland At Monday’s meeting, the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees approved the hire of Joseph Copeland III as the new Assistant Superintendent of Campus Support.  Mr. Copeland has more than 20 years of school experience; he most recently served as Area Director of Student Services in Keller ISD. Prior to that he was a principal in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and an Assistant Principal in Richardson ISD. He has also been a dean of students, Spanish teacher

and coach.

“I am honored to join the Duncanville ISD family. I look forward to taking care of our children,” said Mr. Copeland. 

Mr. Copeland earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Baylor University and his Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. Before beginning his career in education, Mr. Copeland was a professional basketball player in Europe, South America and Mexico.

 

 

 

 

Recognitions

Made with Pride in Duncanville Honorees for October Recognized

Made with Pride October  

Each month, Duncanville ISD recognizes a student, a teacher and a staff member who exemplify what it means to be “Made with Pride in Duncanville.” All three honorees receive a gift bag, a surprise visit from district leaders and are featured in a video. They are also invited to attend the Duncanville ISD board meeting where they are recognized for this honor.

 

This month’s Made with Pride in Duncanville honorees include student Jesus Bocanegra, teacher Marie Irwin, and staff member Stephanie Farmer.

 

Jesus Bocanegra is a third grade student at Hastings Elementary School. He is a model student who demonstrates good character traits. Jesus takes on leadership roles in the classroom and is quick to assist any of his classmates. Jesus is always respectful not only to adults but to his fellow students. He also shows integrity in his work and honesty. Jesus regularly assists his teacher and helps students who need assistance with reading.

 

Marie Irwin is the library media specialist at Daniel Intermediate School. She took the initiative, with Daniel's focus on literacy, to collaborate with teachers to emphasize reading throughout the building each day. One project she initiated was the #DanielReads program. Ms. Irwin took photos of Daniel employees reading books and created artistic posters to decorate the school’s hallways. Ms. Irwin also supports Daniel readers by allowing students to come to the library before school to listen to audio books. Ms. Irwin has created an atmosphere in the library that is welcoming to students and is a place they enjoy.


Stephanie Farmer is a Data Quality Specialist in the PEIMS department. Her dedication to students, the community and Duncanville staff is unparalleled. She is an outstanding, selfless person. Ms. Farmer goes above and beyond each day to ensure that the many needs that come to her attention are addressed with excellence. In a PEIMS department that has been understaffed, Ms. Farmer regularly fills the gap and serves as a mentor to others. She is an extremely hard worker who leads by example.

 

National Custodial Workers Day

DurCustodial Workers ing the Duncanville Independent School District board meeting, the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith recognized all of the district’s custodians as part of National Custodial Workers Day, which was October 2.  Custodians work extensively to ensure campuses are clean and safe for student learning.

Three recently promoted custodian leads were invited to the meeting to be recognized. Brandi Anthony at Reed Middle School, Christina Escamilla at Brandenburg Intermediate School, and Eugenia Barreras at Central Elementary School are described as impressive examples of leaders who provide excellent customer service to students, staff and our families.

 

 

 

 

Texas Education Human Resources Day

The Human Resources Department was recognized at Monday’s board meeting. As part of Texas Education Human Resources Day, which was Human Resources Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Human Resources team was celebrated for their dedication to our employees.

The team manages the hiring process throughout the district, coordination of substitutes, position control, risk management and more. They provide exceptional customer service and are a valuable resource for district staff.

 

Superintendent Report

Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith gave an update on current district events and information. He highlighted our campus leaders as part of National Principals Month and shared the progress being made with the creation of the Duncanville ISD Police Department. Dr. Smith also recognized the Duncanville High School construction students who recently built a safety railing for the Acton family.
