Board Business Meeting Summary
Every month the Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees convenes a regular meeting to publicly address the business of the school district. Meetings are held at the Duncanville ISD Education Plaza (710 S. Cedar Ridge Drive). A highlight of board decisions at this month’s meeting on Monday, May 20, 2019 includes the following:
District Names New Administrative Personnel and Principals
The Board of Trustees welcomed Michael McDonald as the Executive Principal at Duncanville High School. He most recently was the principal at Cedar Hill High School and was previously the principal at Byrd Middle School in Duncanville. Mr. McDonald has expressed his excitement about returning to the school district and once again being a Panther.
Mekasha Brown was introduced as the new principal at Summit Education Center. Ms. Brown comes from Burleson ISD where she was a campus administrator. She’s also been a counselor and teacher. Ms. Brown earned her Master of Education from Midwestern State University.
The new principal at Hastings Elementary is Wendy Simpson-Tate, and she previously served as a campus administrator in Everman ISD. She received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Educational Administration from Texas Wesleyan University.
The Board of Trustees also approved the hiring of Kellee Stephens as the new principal at Smith Elementary. She gained administrative and classroom experience in Lewisville ISD and Denton ISD and has a Master of Education from Concordia University.
Norbert Whitaker joins the district as the new Director of Student Services. Dr. Whitaker was a secondary principal in Fort Worth ISD and was previously a teacher in Lancaster ISD. He has a Doctor of Education from the University of North Texas.
Tiffanie King was introduced as the new Executive Director of Academic Services. She comes from Mansfield ISD where she proposed and developed a dual language school of choice campus. Ms. King will soon earn a Doctor of Education from Texas A&M University – Commerce.
New Board Members and Officers Announced
Jacqueline “Jackie” Culton and Janet Veracruz were sworn in as new members of the Board of Trustees, and Phil McNeely was sworn in to serve another term. In addition, new board officers were announced. Carla Fahey is now the board president, Cassandra Philips is vice president and Mr. McNeely is secretary.
Former Board Members Recognized for their Service
As Tom Kennedy and Joe Veracruz’s terms came to an end, each trustee shared parting words thanking the district for the opportunity to serve on the school board. Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith and other board members shared kind words about the outgoing trustees.
Dr. Smith presented Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Veracruz with a crystal award thanking them for their service. Janice Savage-Martin was also recognized with an award for her commitment as the board president this past year.
Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith began his report by sharing the success of Duncanville ISD’s Employee Appreciation Luau where 24 campus teachers of the year, three Spirit of a Champion honorees, retirees and service award recipients were celebrated. The event featured live entertainment with hula dancers, games and food as a way to say “Mahalo” or “thank you.” Two district teachers of the year were announced at the event – Elementary Teacher of the Year Darlene Taylor from Central Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year Luzviminda Pascasio from Kennemer Middle School.
Dr. Smith recognized the eight Duncanville High School seniors who graduated from Mountain View College with associate degrees. These seniors worked hard taking dual credit courses and summer and winter sessions to get a head start on their college careers.
Dr. Smith concluded his report with Decision Day at Duncanville High School. Graduating seniors had the opportunity to announce their college commitments and military plans. Scholarships were presented by Jim McDonald, a community member who wanted to give seniors the same opportunities his daughter had when she graduated from DHS years ago. Five students were award $1,000 scholarships each through Mr. McDonald.
