Pantherettes Depart for State

Duncanville Community Celebrates Pantherettes as Team Departs for State

With fellow students and members of the community cheering, the Duncanville Pantherettes boarded a bus bound for San Antonio Thursday morning. The team is now two games away from winning a ninth Texas State Championship.

On Friday at 8:30 p.m., the Pantherettes are scheduled to play Cibolo-Steele, a team they have not played this season. Senior guard Ciera Johnson is optimistic about Duncanville’s chances.

“I don’t care who we have to play, we’re going to win,” Johnson said. “We’re not going to lose this year. We’re gonna get it.”

Head Coach Cathy Self-Morgan said she and her girls have enjoyed this undefeated season, going 37-0, and they’re excited as they head into the state semi-final game.

“I want it so bad for these girls. They have such good character and all my seniors are academic all-state,” Self-Morgan said.

Self-Morgan’s plan while on the road is to keep the girls’ schedule as routine as possible. The Pantherettes already have a high school lined up where they’ll run their regular workouts. In her additional role as the team’s surrogate mom, Coach Self-Morgan plans to tuck the girls in and take their cellphones by 10 p.m. each night so they will be rested and ready to play their best.

Self-Morgan said she knows the Duncanville community is behind her team and she and the girls feed off that unwavering support.

“They’re loud and proud – they’re a rowdy bunch,” Self-Morgan said. “They’re definitely not your golf group if you know what I mean. They do make their noise and we love them to death.”
