Construction Update 6.09.16

Duncanville ISD is entering a crucial time on several construction projects that will introduce new campuses, building expansions, upgraded safety features and refurbished classrooms at many of our facilities. Construction teams continue to make progress on the projects funded by the $102.545 million bond package overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2014.

Hastings Elementary School

The largest project expected to be completed for the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year is the construction of a brand new Hastings Elementary School.

The new Hastings is equipped with the most current security features, internet access and educational tools. The building’s design was influenced by input by teachers, administrators and the community, and includes large classrooms and interactive areas.

Demolition is underway on the old Hastings so the parking lot and sidewalks can be completed for the new building.

Duncanville High School

Duncanville High School is closed this summer while the building receives a safety and security overhaul. Workers are installing new automatic locks and other security hardware on 512 doors, and they’re adding a total of 235 strategically located surveillance cameras to the existing system to provide a more comprehensive view of campus activities.

In addition to DHS, six other schools are receiving the security upgrades this summer: PACE High School, Summit Education Center, Daniel Intermediate, and Alexander, Bilhartz, and Smith Elementary Schools.

The Sandra Meadows Arena at DHS is receiving a brand new sound system that will welcome fans next year for the Panthers and Pantherettes basketball seasons.

Kennemer Middle School & Hyman Elementary School

Hyman Elementary School and Kennemer Middle School are both being expanded to accommodate additional students. Hyman received an addition to accommodate the addition of 5th graders this school year. Workers there are completing the finishing touches including landscaping and new steps and sidewalk installation.

Along with the additional wing being built at Kennemer, the existing classrooms are being refreshed with new flooring and paint. The cafeteria and kitchen are undergoing an expansion and remodel to make room for 6th grade students who will begin attending Kennemer in the fall of 2017.

Acton Elementary School

Construction crews are making progress at the new Acton Elementary campus, but the rainy weather presented some delays in late May and early June. Roofing is expected to start soon. Once that occurs, weather will no longer be a factor because the bulk of the work, at that point, will be done inside. Workers are pushing toward a December completion date so students, teachers and staff can move in after the first of the year.
