DHS Senior Earns Scholarships to Ivy League Universities

Enrique Garcia
Enrique Garcia’s face lights up when he talks about where he’ll be going to college next fall. The Duncanville High School senior had his choice of Ivy League schools; he chose Cornell University.

Enrique believes if he can do it, so can other DHS students.

“I don’t want my classmates to be afraid of applying to schools of that caliber,” Enrique said.

Enrique pursued a variety of interests during his 13 years in Duncanville ISD. He became an accomplished bassoonist in the high school’s top band. As a fan of history, economics and environmental issues, Enrique said his favorite extracurricular activity was Academic Decathlon because it allowed him to explore a wide range of topics.

Academically, Enrique credits English teacher Margaret Thomas for pushing him to be his best.

“Her class prepared me for the rigor that I would experience,” Enrique said. “She’s one of those teachers who makes you want to do better.”

Enrique’s academic credentials earned him entry to both Dartmouth and Cornell Universities which have acceptance rates between 10 and 14 percent. He earned a scholarship, which will pay for the majority of his tuition and living expenses.

Enrique hopes his experience encourages others to aim high when considering their future.

“Just coming from Duncanville and going to a school recognized on an international level makes me feel proud and humbled,” Enrique said.
