Hundreds of Runners to Wear Student's Shirt Design

Lena's 5K t-shirt design What started as a homework assignment turned into a unique opportunity for Duncanville High School senior Lena Vongdachanh. Last spring, Advanced Graphic Design teacher Jay Lamar asked some of his students to create a logo for the 2017 Heart of Duncanville 5K Run and Walk.

Lena has lived in Duncanville her whole life, and she wanted her design to reflect her hometown.

“I didn’t want it to be something people had seen before,” Lena said. “I wanted it to incorporate my own ideas.”

The race’s organizing committee loved the imagery Lena created, which includes Duncanville’s historic Ben Franklin tower and the railroad tracks that run through town. Ben Franklin sponsors the annual race benefiting the Duncanville ISD Education Foundation. Store manager Kasey Cheshier said Lena’s logo resonated with his fellow race organizers.

“It definitely stood out as a unique design,” Kasey said. “It’s one of my favorites we’ve had through the years.”

Lena said it’s exciting to see her artwork being used for a ‘real’ job. More than 500 runners will be wearing her design during the race on Saturday, October 14.

“This was one of my dreams to do because I want to be a graphic designer, so this is the first step,” Lena said.
