Hastings Garden Club Grows Young Entrepreneurs

Students at Hastings Elementary School are getting their hands dirty. Last week, they planted vegetables in raised gardens behind the school.

The digging and sowing followed a field trip to a local garden and then to a local grocery store earlier this year. There, the young farmers evaluated the retail cost of the same vegetables they plan to grow. Their goal is to come up with a business plan to turn their project into a profit.

The newly formed Hastings Garden Club includes 17 Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students from second through fourth grades. Students from Duncanville High School's agriculture classes visited to help the younger students start their plants.

The elementary students will be working on the garden three times a week for 30 minutes per day as part of their GATE project required by the State of Texas.
