Jimilla Cole says her son Jayden comes home every day talking about what he learned in his Pre-K class at Alexander Elementary School.
“Saturday he said ‘Mama, I baked a cake at school,’ and then he told me the steps they took to bake a cake,” Cole said.
After spending a semester in Sheri Lee’s classroom, Jayden is learning his alphabet, numbers and as he says, 'how to measure everything in the classroom.'
“He has learned a lot,” Cole said. “Every day he comes home telling me his stories.”
Jayden is one of 358 children who are getting a head start on their educational careers by being enrolled in the district’s Pre-K program.
Half day programs have been available in the past, but this year marked the beginning of full day Pre-K at five elementary schools. The initiative has been a success – all of the full day Pre-K classes are full.
“I’m very happy with it,” Cole said.
Jimilla Cole says she knows Jayden will be ready next August when it’s time to move to kindergarten. She credits the time he has spent in Ms. Lee’s Pre-K classroom.
“He’s very prepared,” Cole said. He’s learned a lot more than I could have taught him.”
