STEAM Academy at Kennemer Opens with Ribbon Cutting

STEAM Academy Ribbon Cutting The district celebrated the opening of the STEAM Academy at Kennemer with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 9. Duncanville ISD Board of Trustees President Janice Savage-Martin cut the ceremonial ribbon with Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith, board members, school staff, students and parents looking on.

Students from the incoming class presented a computer application they designed at a summer camp to demonstrate part of the specialized of the curriculum they'll be studying in the upcoming school year.

Students also led parents and school board members on a tour of their new facility. The addition to Kennemer Middle School was made possible by the 2014 bond election.

The academy includes 19 classrooms including two Mac desktop computer labs. One of the highlights of the academy is the Maker Space classroom where students will engineer prototypes of their designs and can use 3-D printers to make their projects come to life.

The STEAM Academy at Kennemer launches its inaugural year with a group of 135 sixth grade students from across the district. The program was open to all incoming 6th graders throughout the district. Participants were chosen by lottery.
